People are drawn to areas with natural light. There is something special about natural light from above, bringing the sky indoors. Home skylight can make a dark room bright, provide ventilation and add architectural appeal.

Water leaks are a common problem with skylights. Take the following steps to avoid water leaks:

● Mount the skylight above the roof surface

● Install a curb (a raised, watertight lip to deflect water from the skylight) and flashing

● Thoroughly seal joints

● Follow the manufacturer's guidelines

It is also prudent to apply a layer of sheet waterproofing over the flanges/flashing of the skylight. This is generally installed under the finish roofing material as an aid in protecting against ice dams. Avoid water diversion devices such as roof crickets or diverter strips, as they often create more problems than they solve.

Installation: When a roof leaks, it leaks at roof penetration. It does not leak in the middle of a field of shingles or tiles. A skylight is a big roof penetration. As such a skylight has the potential to leak. The difference between a skylight that leaks and one that does not is a good installer.
